Nehemiah 7-13
During this chapter Israel finds itself re-establishing themselves as a nation after the exile from Babylon. Ezra leads all the Jews to a renew ceremony where he reads the law of Moses to the people and the people celebrate the Feast Of Tabernacles for seven days and on the eighth day they assemble and recall all past sins which lead to the destruction of Jerusalem and the enslavement of Jews. They then enter into a covenant to keep the law and to separate themselves from all other people. They understood that if they were to survive they were to remember and obey God’s law’s. Nehemiah condemns mixed marriages as one of his main concerns was that they would not teach their children the Hebrew language “the Language of Judah” (13:24) Nehemiah takes measures to repopulate the city and returns to Susa after 12 years in Jerusalem. After some time in Susa he returns, only to find that the people have broken the covenant. He enforces the covenant and prays to God for his favour. Main Themes
